TEMPLE TOUR

India has often been called the “land of temples “. This tour takes you for a visit to selection of the most prominent temples and shrine in Mumbai. Start the tour with visit to Babulnath Temple. This temple is situated at the end of Marine Drive and south of Malabar Hill. It was originally built in 1780 and in 1900 a tall spire was added to the original temple. A stone Lingam of Shiva is worshipped at Babulnath. We then continue on to the Walkeshwar Temple. The legend states that Rama and Lakshman from the Hindu epic Ramayana, arrived here in search of Sita. Rama's vow to worship the 'Shivalingam' required Lakshman to bring one every day from Benaras. One day, Lakshman was delayed in his mission forcing Rama to make a lingam out of sand. The temple thus came to be known as Walkeshwar (Sand God). The spring is believed to be created by an arrow fired from Rama’s fabled bow. We will next stop at the Mahalakshmi temple, Mumbai's best known temple. This temple is dedicated to Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth. The temple contains images of Goddesses Mahalaxmi, Mahakali (Goddess of strength) and Mahasaraswati (Goddess of Wisdom). All three images are adorned with nose rings, gold bangles and pearl necklaces. The image of Mahalaxmi is shown riding a tiger and a demon (Mahishasur) in tandem. Flowers and coconuts are given as offerings to Mahalaxmi by devotees. Proceed to the Haji Ali Shrine, built to honor the Muslim saint, Haji Ali. The body of the saint is enclosed by a semi-circular tomb, on top of which is a silk cloth. Devotees pay their respects by praying and touching their foreheads and lips to the cloth. The tomb is situated in the ocean and is connected to the mainland by a narrow concrete causeway. A visit to the mosque is only possible during low tide. Before returning to the ship, we will visit the historic Shri Siddhivinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant God. The temple is at least 200 years old and seats a rare idol of Lord Ganesh, visible from any point within the temple. Another rarity is that Lord Ganesha’s trunk here turns towards the right unlike most other statues where His trunk turns towards the left.
