HERO HONDA FIH WORLD CUP 2010  
New Delhi is the venue for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010. Commencing on 28 February till 13 March 2010, the 12th edition of the cup will be a celebration of India's national sport and will have the twelve best nations in the world competing for hockey's most coveted prize. The champions of the five confederations Australia, Korea, Canada, South Africa, England as well as three
other teams from Europe; Germany, Netherlands and Spain qualified automatically along with host nation India. Pakistan, New Zealand and Argentina have qualified via the World Cup qualifiers concluded recently.
The Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010 is an event jointly being staged by the Federation of International Hockey (FIH), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Hockey India.
The FIH is the governing body of the sport and not only regulates the sport, but is also responsible for its development and promotion so as to guarantee a secure future for hockey.
Germany is the two time defending world champions as well as the Olympic winner of Beijing 2008. Ranked number 1 in the
world ranking list Germany are aiming to become the first team in World Cup history to win three consecutive titles. Australia, the present Champions Trophy holders are ranked second and have been runners up to Germany in the last two World Cups. Silver medalists at the Beijing Olympics, Spain have carried on with their 100% record in appearances in the championships.
Following the same pattern are European giants Netherlands, who have lifted the trophy three times. Korea, the highest ranked Asian country (5th), have been making rapid progress making it to the last four in the previous two editions, having only made their competition debut in 1994. Current European champions England make up the top six in the world rankings. Winners in 1975, India have a rich history in the sport and are un-paralleled in their Olympic Gold medals success, having achieved eight. Neighbours Pakistan, a record 4 time champions, overcame Japan in the final of the first qualifiers in Lille, France to compete once more. New Zealand qualified through the second World Cup qualifiers played on their own home turf defeating Malaysia in the final. Pan American Champions Canada will be competing for the fourth time and African continent victors South Africa will be in their third consecutive World Cup. Argentina booked the twelfth and final spot for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup with a hard fought victory over Belgium in Quilmes in the third World Cup qualifier.
   
ORGANISERS  
The IOA is the apex sports organization of Olympic Sports in the country. Each Olympic and Non-Olympic Sport has a Federation at the National level and is affiliated to the IOA. Along with these two bodies the Organizing Committee consists of Hockey India which is affiliated as a full member of FIH and IOA. Formed in May 2009 it is a recently developed body aiming to take the game forward in the country and ensure a bright prospect ahead.
The FIH has named Commune Sports & Entertainment as the exclusive Event Agency for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010.

Hero Honda is the title sponsor of the prestigious hockey tournament and this esteemed once in four years competition is officially named the 'Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010'.In an extravagant ceremony put together by Hero Honda at Le Meridien, the official hotel for the tournament, the top brass of the FIH(International Hockey Federation),IOA (Indian Olympic Association) and Hockey India along with the members of the
Indian World Cup winning team of 1975 and a few greats of Indian hockey's glorious past came together for this conference.
   
VENUE  
Major Dhyan Chand (MDC) National Stadium is the venue for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup 2010. It is named after the legendary Indian hockey legend, Dhyan Chand, who graced the game in the 1920's and 1930's winning 3 Olympic Gold's.
The President of FIH - Mr. Leandro Negre said, “India is one of the most valuable and important members of the FIH family.
The FIH hopes that hosting the 2010 World Cup will give a tremendous boost to Indian hockey.
